Abstract: This talk presents a short biography of Fourier, his French origin and his relations with the society in the beginning of the century XIX. It also presents the way he proposed the representation of functions through trigonometric series, and the natural extension to the (integral) Fourier transform. It also briefly analyses the convergence problems that these series raised and how they inspired the work of great mathematicians in the XIX -XX centuries. Along with, it also introduces some innovative ideas as the theory of distributions. Finally, the topic of applying the Fourier transform to non-stationary signals is also addressed.
