Abstract - During the last years, there has been substantial amount of research in microarray technology. The result of a microarray experiment is a pair of grayscale images. These images are characterized by a massive amount of data, due to the high resolution of the scanners. Therefore, the development of efficient compression algorithms is a key aspect in this area. In this paper, we propose a compression algorithm for microarray images based on a background/foreground separation method. Each component (background and foreground) is compressed using 3D finitecontext models and arithmetic coding. The experimental results in a large set of images show that in some cases we can obtain good compression results.
